The Department of Art and Art History is pleased to host Salve alum Whiteley Foster as the Hamilton Gallery’s 2021 Artist-in-Residence.

New England-based cartoonist and illustrator Whiteley Foster will relocate their studio practice to the Hamilton Gallery for two weeks following the Thanksgiving holiday.  During this period, the artist will share their creative process with the Salve community and incite new opportunities for learning and collaboration on campus.

Through digital illustration and animation, Whiteley develops stories with a LGBTQ focus.  Their work provides a safe space, free of adversity and abuse, for the LGBTQ community to explore themes of love and acceptance.  In recent years, Whiteley’s professional practice has shifted from a computer-centered studio to an untethered iPad, allowing them to both draw and travel with a greater range of possibility.

Whiteley Foster is an adjunct faculty member with Salve Regina’s Department of Art and Art History.  They teach courses in drawing and illustration.  Whitely received their BA from Salve Regina University in 2016 and their MFA in cartooning from The Center for Cartoon Studies in 2018.  They are currently a freelance artist working on original art for publication.  Their previous experience includes work as a colorist at Disney Hyperion on projects such as “The Descendants” and “Brightly Woven,” a designer for King Arthur Flour, and a clean-up artist for The Charles Schulz Studio on original “Peanuts” comic strips.  Whiteley’s currently illustration work includes the series “Friend of the Devil.”

Whiteley Foster will be working in the Hamilton Gallery during business hours from December 2-15, 2021.  On Thursday, December 9 the campus community and the general public are invited to attend a gallery reception for the artist.  This reception will run from 5:00 to 7:00 PM in the Hamilton Gallery.

The Dorrance H. Hamilton Gallery is located in the Antone Academic Center on the campus of Salve Regina University.  It is handicap accessible with parking along Lawrence and Leroy Avenues.  Its exhibits are open Tuesdays and Thursdays 11:00 to 6:00 p.m., Wednesdays and Fridays 11:00 to 5:00 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays noon to 4:00 p.m.  The gallery is closed on Mondays.  We invite you to visit us.
