CHARACTER APPEAL:

Portraits from the Newport Art Museum

October 6 – November 3, 2022

Opening Reception:  Thursday, October 6, 2022 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm

The Dorrance H. Hamilton Gallery and Salve Regina University’s Department of Art and Art History are pleased to announce the opening of Character Appeal: Portraits from the Newport Art Museum, an exhibition of portraiture from the 18th to 21st centuries.

Character Appeal: Portraits from the Newport Art Museum examines likeness, identity and personality through the timeless subject of portraiture.  This exhibition presents seventeen artworks on loan from the Newport Art Museum, featuring a range of paintings, drawings, prints, and photographs.  Highlights include a Japanese woodblock print from 1796 and an oil portrait of the writer and suffragist Julia Ward Howe from the 1890s.  The exhibition features numerous artworks with Newport ties, including paintings by Christopher Benson and Freedley Durr, a wood engraving by John La Farge, and a pencil drawing by Howard Gardiner Cushing.  This collection of portraits offers images of youth and age, individuals and couples, the costumed and the contemplative, the everyday and the reimagined.

A generous partnership with the Newport Art Museum made this exhibition possible.  This curated selection of portraits was organized in collaboration with a community engaged learning course co-taught by Professors Ernest Jolicoeur and Anthony F. Mangieri of Salve Regina University’s Department of Art and Art History.

Character Appeal: Portraits from the Newport Art Museum runs from October 6 through November 3, 2022.  On Thursday, October 6 the university community and general public are invited to attend an opening reception.  The reception will run from 6:00 to 8:00 pm in the Dorrance H. Hamilton Gallery.

Coral Woodbury: The Question Is

Exhibition Dates: February 17 – March 10, 2022

Reception Date: February 17 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM

The Hamilton Gallery and Department of Art and Art History are pleased to host Coral Woodbury: The Question Is, an exhibition of paintings and mixed media works that critically reinterpret Western artistic heritage from a feminist perspective.

Who knows what goes through an artist’s mind?  Perhaps what matters more is what goes through your own, and what you experience, when viewing art.  The artist, after all, has left the room.  But art speaks.  What do you hear?  This show is a playful invitation to dialogue with art in a way seldom encountered.  Woodbury approaches this show as a teaching exhibition, befitting a university setting.  Organizing it around works from diverse series, studies, and explorations, it is a peek into artistic practice that usually remains behind studio doors.  This body of work encompasses internationally exhibited projects as well as unresolved compositions and queries, what you might call “B sides.”  Accompanying questions provoke engagement and discussion, and invoke a little mystery.

Coral Woodbury has participated in numerous residencies, including in Italy with rosenclaire, with whom she has worked for nearly 30 years.  In 2020 she was a finalist for the international Mother Art Prize, culminating in the Procreate Project exhibition at Cromwell Place in London.  Last year, in addition to two solo shows, she participated in Call and Response at Newport Art Museum. In 2018 she took part in Humanities Approaches to the Opioid Crisis at Boston University; in the International Traveling Art exhibition at Taragaon Museum, Nepal; and in the #00Bienal de la Habana, Cuba.  She is represented by Abigail Ogilvy in Boston, and HackelBury Fine Art in London, where her show Palimpsest is currently on view, and for which she gave a talk with renowned feminist art historian, Griselda Pollock, at the University of Cambridge’s New Hall Art Collection.  All while raising three children.

Coral Woodbury: The Question Is will remain open from February 17 – March 10, 2022.  On Thursday, February 17 the campus community is invited to attend a gallery reception for the artist.  This reception will run from 5:00 to 7:00 PM in the Hamilton Gallery.

Nate Piekos: The Essential Guide to Comic Book Lettering

January 20 – February 10, 2022

Gallery Reception: January 20, 2022 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM

The Department of Art and Art History is pleased to host the exhibition Nate Piekos: The Essential Guide to Comic Book Lettering.

This exhibition looks behind the curtain at the way word balloons, cover logos and sound effects are crafted to guide the reader’s experience of comics.  From the early days of T-squares and ink pens to the digital age of pixels and tablets, comic book letterers have breathed life into the text elements and graphic design work of everyone’s favorite comic books.  The Essential Guide to Comic Book Lettering is the first exhibition of its kind to focus on the design and lettering process, and features work from Nate’s recently released and critically-acclaimed book of the same name.  In addition, a large collection of graphic novels that feature Nate Piekos’ lettering and graphic work will be available in the gallery for visitors to enjoy firsthand.

Rhode Island native, Nate Piekos has been a freelance letterer in the comic book industry since his first project with Marvel Comics over twenty years ago.  He’s worked on such popular titles as GREEN ARROW, THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY, FIGHT CLUB 2, MIDDLEWEST, and many others. He’s the creator of one of the industry’s most popular font websites, Blambot.com, and he has designed logos for the X-MEN, and Charles Schulz’s PEANUTS.  Nate continues to work on high-profile projects for virtually every major publisher in the comic book industry, including Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Dark Horse Comics, and Image Comics.

Nate Piekos graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in graphic design from Rhode Island College in 1998.  His font and logo designs can be seen worldwide.  He’s the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2010 Rhode Island College Alumni Honor Roll Award for Success in the Field of Design, the 2010 Eagle Award for Best Letterer, and the 2020 Ringo Award for Best Letterer.
